Microsoft Forms to Replace InfoPath? Microsoft: “No.”
Like many of our customers, we’ve been tracking Microsoft comments regarding the retirement and replacement of InfoPath since the deprecation of InfoPath was announced in early 2014. When the new Microsoft Forms product was announced last year, the blogosphere started wondering: Is this the replacement for InfoPath?
The client and the on-premises version of InfoPath Forms Services in SharePoint 2013 will be fully supported until 2023. The forms service will be supported in Office 365 until at least the next major release of Office. To replace your InfoPath forms, you can choose one of the following alternatives. One of the biggest advantages of using the on-premise version of Microsoft SharePoint includes the ability to deploy InfoPath forms to it. “InfoPath and SharePoint Designer have been the defacto tooling of choice for all versions of SharePoint. They were easy to use, were part of the Office suite of tools and just worked. Microsoft over the past few years made decisions to no longer update and support these tools, simply due to the way changes were made, these are no longer.
Recently Microsoft announced that Microsoft Forms is now available to Office 365 commercial subscribers. Now Microsoft Forms are no longer limited to education subscribers as they had been in the past. This new move has spurred another round of questioning about InfoPath replacement. SharePoint blogger and Microsoft MVP Marc Anderson tweeted ‘This is going to confuse a lot of people’.
Microsoft has been precise in describing where Microsoft Forms fits into their productivity suite. A Microsoft support FAQ addresses the InfoPath replacement question:
Microsoft Forms appears to compete directly with Google Forms, first and foremost in the education arena. For businesses and enterprises, it is probably best understood as an in-house alternative to products like Survey Monkey.

As Office 365 specialist Jeremy Thake blogged:
“It surprises me that this product was not just called Microsoft Surveys, but I guess it indicates how much of a threat they felt Google Forms was. That would have made the differentiation a lot simpler.”
